Add Scot Shields to the Team USA mix, compounding our previously stated concerns. Shields pitched for Team USA in 2006 as well, and then went out and had one of the better seasons of his career, so maybe our concerns are unfounded.
Sam Miller did a nice job researching and explaining the effect on both starters and relievers pitching in the WBC during 2006. His research suggested that starters were more adversely affected than were relievers.
And that’s the real concern; John Lackey struggled early last year with arm trouble and seems to be risking more than most by participating. As always, though, you’ve got to like his competitive spirit.
