Last night, Kendry Morales and Gigantes del Cibao advanced to the Dominican Winter League final series by beating Azucareros 12-7. They will now move on to face Erick Aybar and Licey for a chance to represent the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean World Series.
Leading 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Gigantes broke the game open with a combination of timely hits and atrocious defense by Azucareros, scoring six times and, in the process, turning the game into a laugher (Dodger fans won’t be surprised to learn that Angel Berroa made what was the crucial error in the inning).
Fittingly, Kendry Morales led off the big inning with a base hit. Morales led all players in posteason homeruns and RBI and enters the final series as one of the hottest hitters in DWL postseason history.
The final series will feature a number of familiar players, with both teams being led by young Angels. Erick Aybar, who led all players in postseason doubles, has been the star of Licey and, obviously, Kendry Morales has been a powerhouse for Gigantes.
The final series gets under way later today and should prove exciting, with Dominican baseball never devoid of passion from players and fans alike (yes, this series will be a rematch of that notorious game).
