Pitching By Compass

Rich Lederer has posted his 2008 categorization of starting pitchers by strikeout and groundball rates.

Among Angel pitchers, John Lackey heads the list, perhaps suggesting that his 2008 tendency to give up the long ball was a bit of an aberration (though it’s something he struggled with early in his career as well).

Ervin Santana and Jered Weaver are both listed in the “southeast quadrant,” among some of the stronger starting pitchers in the game (Santana, in fact, is the third highest rated pitcher in that quadrant).

Down in the “northwest quadrant” sit both Jon Garland and Joe Saunders, striking out few while struggling to keep the ball on the ground.  We can only hope that these numbers aren’t further evidence that Saunders could regress statistically in 2009.
